missmelysseNov. 22nd, 2006 08:34 pm DFW NANOWRIMO TGIO INVITATION

You are cordially invited to the DFW-NANO TGIO.

When: Saturday, December 2nd, 1:00 - 3:00 PM
Where: Hometown Buffet
4606 S. Cooper
Arlington, TX
I20 & S. Cooper, in same parking lot as El Fenix and Olive Garden, across Cooper from TGI Fridays.

Why this location: I realize it's further south than we'd hoped but it has a banquet room that doesn't require a deposit, or any fee at all, and since we'll be there at lunch time, about $8 buys you all you can eat or drink. While, admittedly, it's not a four-star restaurant, the food is better than Crystals, and it's also right off I-20, near The Parks mall.

Notes: PLEASE RSVP - We need 20 ppl to keep the room.
There's a group coming in at 5, but I booked us from 1-3 so we can have a nice late lunch/early dinner and not have to worry about being out exactly on the dot of three.

The best place to park is on the El Fenix side of the restaurant, as that's where the front door is. There are ramps and stairs from the parking up to the door. Inside, please buy your meal, then head straight past all the hot buffet food, and before you crash into the far wall, turn left. There's a door leading into the banquet room. Please claim a seat (consider sitting near someone you've never talked to before), BEFORE you get your food.

BRING: An excerpt (your favorite passage - around 500 words) from your novel, an appetite, and a sense of fun. If there's interest, we can also collect CANNED GOODS for donation to a food bank (Does someone want to volunteer for this?)

IF you want to announce any projects or special events in your live (on going writing groups, etc), PM me ASAP because I'm making a list of stuff to cover.

And yes, I'm sure there will be ride-sharing available.

You're all amazing, and I look forward to seeing you a week from Saturday.

Thought this community would be more active. Is everyone still typing away, trying to get to 50k?

Where are you with your wordcount?

elfiedawnOct. 31st, 2006 10:02 pm Eight Hours till Nanowrimo!

My friend purplyana in the Philippines is already writing thanks to the time difference. Our tomorrow is her today. hehe.

I’m tempted to dump the plot and just write whatever comes to mind at midnight… but also slightly worried that nothing would come to mind then.

I have the day off, which seems a shame since tomorrow is a workday. It means less time to write tonight.

What am I going to do on Halloween? Watch a scary movie, not that I own many, or maybe I’ll rent a new one… Oh and hand out candy but of course. :)

Now then, where did I put all the leftovers from last year? I had pencils and spider rings… stuff like that. Hrm. I’m not certain I want to try my luck with my room. I might get lost.

fenconSep. 7th, 2006 04:02 pm Ahoy, matey! Celebrate "Talk Like a Pirate Day" at FenCon

Dallas, TX — Talk Like A Pirate Day is an international celebration of pirate culture. FenCon, a local science fiction convention, extends the celebration to Friday, September 22nd, with a day of pirate-themed activities and a concert of sea shanties and pirate songs by Heather Alexander.

Celtic musician Heather Alexander, FenCon's Music Guest of Honor, will perform a variety of songs from her new album "Arms of the Sea" which makes its debut at FenCon. This talented writer and performer has been thrilling audiences for over twenty years with a mix of original and traditional music of the British Isles.

FenCon, now in its third year, is a weekend-long literary science fiction and fantasy convention with filk music, an art show, charity fund-raising, and much more. Unlike other science fiction events that celebrate actors, FenCon plays host to the writers, artists, and musicians that create the fantasy and science fiction worlds that inspire our imaginations.

Honored guests at this year's FenCon include legendary author Alan Dean Foster, celebrated artist Darrell K. Sweet, award-winning author and editor Lawrence Watt-Evans, award-winning Celtic musician Heather Alexander, and best-selling author Jim Butcher. FenCon also features dozens of local authors, artists, fans, and musicians as program
participants including Rachel Caine, P.N. Elrod, and the Four Redheads of the Apocalypse.

FenCon is three days of fannish fun including discussion panels, open gaming, autograph sessions, parties, concerts, a large merchandise dealer room, and the FenCon Cabaret on Saturday night. More than just a costume contest, the FenCon Cabaret features music, dancing, comedy, and more. FenCon also includes a 24-hour video room full of fan
videos, rarely-seen films, and the winners of this year's Hugo Awards for science fiction excellence.

FenCon III starts Friday, September 22nd, at noon and ends Sunday, September 24th, at 5pm. This year's convention will be held at the Holiday Inn Select North Dallas off of I-635/LBJ in Dallas, Texas. Memberships are available for the whole weekend at $35 for adults, $20 for youth 6 to 15, and kids 5 and under admitted free with a paid adult. Day memberships are also available at a reduced rate.

FenCon's designated charity this year is the American Diabetes Association, in honor of Fan Guest of Honor Judith Ward. Judith passed away in July due to complications from diabetes so all monies raised by our annual charity auction and limited-edition charity art print projects will be donated to the ADA in her memory. Last year's efforts raised over $3500 for the Salvation Army's disaster relief fund for victims of Hurricanes Rita and Katrina.

FenCon, a fan-operated science fiction and fantasy literary and filk convention, is a production of the Dallas Future Society. The Dallas Future Society is registered with the state of Texas as a non-profit corporation dedicated to the advancement of science, literature, and music for the future of all mankind.

I don't think it's too early to start poking around here. It's almost time to gear up for 2006.

worthycomicsJun. 7th, 2006 08:36 pm Introduction (Newbie)

I've started journaling at the nanowrimo2006 community (mostly because they seemed more active), but I figured I'd announce my presence here, as I'm in Dallas, and plan to attend the events.

My name is Daniel, I'm 31 years old, work in McKinney but live in Dallas itself (how's that for living backwards?) I LOVE to write, but haven't finished a project yet (much to my annoyance), and this will be my first NaNoWriMo. Um...not sure what else to post, but I hope to see all of you in a few months for the kick off event! :)
